Breathing asphalt fumes can irritate the nose throat and lungs causing coughing wheezing and or shortness of breath. There is no direct evidence that inhalation of roof tar odors causes cancer. Historically the use of chemical products by roofing workers had been fairly limited to propane hot asphaltic tar or rubber and light gravel.
