If the cracks are extensive replacement is the better option.
The ridge is on the underside of the panel. Prime the back and edges of the new siding. Cut the spare piece of vinyl along the marks using straight tin snips. Use framing square and utility knife to cut through face of siding.
Peeling paint should be removed the area primed and repainted. Do not drive the nails flush or countersink them. Thoroughly paint all exposed edges and grooves.
